Dear Friend,

Please continue with us in prayer for spiritual breakthrough in Central Asia! Here are some points to help you pray more specifically for each region:

Tajikistan

The government of Tajikistan is currently revising the laws governing religion. Local pastors, who have seen a draft copy of the new law, report that it would be almost impossible for churches to meet the proposed requirements for registration. Under the new law, a church would need the signatures of 1,200 members to register (in Dushanbe city) 800 signatures in other cities and 400 signatures in villages. There are no churches of that size in Tajikistan. All existing churches would be required to re-register, so this could lead to the closure of all registered churches in Tajikistan. Church leaders in Tajikistan are calling local believers to pray and fast every Monday specifically for this situation. Please join in prayer with our brothers and sisters in Tajikistan at this time!

Uzbekistan

In the natural, the situation in Uzbekistan appears to be getting worse. There is more pressure on churches. Virtually all foreign workers have been forced to leave the country. Please pray specifically for a man named Zainidina. He was arrested at the beginning of June. He was later released but given until July 1st to leave his home and the region where he lives. He was threatened by local Muslims not to go to church and when he ignored their threats, was beaten up. His mother is against him and is taking his name off the deed of the family property. Please pray for strength for this man and his wife. Recently, I spoke in person to someone close to Pastor Dimitry who was sentenced to 4 years in prison a couple of months ago. He has now been moved to a labor camp with worse conditions and further from his wife and family. Please pray that he will stand strong in the face of interrogations and hard conditions. Good news is that God has been doing miracles and protecting him. A prison official who was known to be extremely harsh with his prisoners was removed from office the day Dimitri was transferred to his prison. The new man who took authority is much more lenient. One day Dimitri was called in for interrogation and everyone expected him to be horribly physically abused but no one laid a hand on him. Praise God for His protection and care in the midst of this severe trial. Pastor Dimitri's wife is demonstrating unbelievable strength in this situation. Pray for God to continue to minister to her and the children. The assistant pastor is continuing to lead the church. Pray for supernatural strength for this congregation to continue to stand strong.

Kazakhstan

A new bill has been drafted and presented for consideration. If passed, this bill would greatly limit religious freedom. This bill has not yet been signed by the Prime Minister and has not yet been presented to Parliament. Therefore, there is still time to pray and for believers to present their concerns to Parliament. Please pray specifically for “AROK” the pastor’s association that has a voice with the government to have an opportunity to participate in the process of deliberating this new law. Also, pray that the government will consider the concerns presented by AROK and other Religious organizations. Also please continue to pray for an end to hostility by Kazakhstan’s government toward non-traditional denominations. Recent documents explained “how to avoid getting trapped in ‘sects’ like the Baptist faith”. Pray for freedom to worship God without government pressure.

Kyrgyzstan

Continue to pray for stability in the government and a positive attitude towards Protestant Christianity. I recently met with a key figure (believer) who has been involved in government in the past. This person shared with me of an agenda to limit religious freedom in the country. This seems to be the trend across Central Asia, following the example of Russia. Pray for a group of people involved in government who are working to establish a base of justice and plan for the country to move forward economically without corruption. Also, continue to pray for believers, especially in the south, who are experiencing great persecution from their communities. However, in spite of this, there are reports of God doing miracles and many people coming to faith!

Turkmenistan

Pray for Baptist preacher Kalataevsky serving 3 years in a labor camp for illegally crossing the border in 2001, establishing a prayer house and organizing meetings for Christian Baptists. His family insists the sentence was imposed to punish him for his activity with the unregistered Baptist congregation in the city. Also, pray for Yevgeny Potolov, head of a Council of churches Baptist congregation in Turkmenbashi, detained by police on May 19th. Police refused to tell his wife why he was being held in a detention center. Apparently, secret police are handling the case. Pray that improvement in religious freedom becomes evident under their new leader. Pray for Christians to be free from persecution and involved in bringing transformation to this troubled nation.

Azerbaijan

Pray for a Baptist pastor from the remote village of Aliabad facing prison. Members were told Zau Balaev is to face a criminal charge of “resisting government representatives”, which carries a maximum 3-year prison term. Authorities claim he set a dog onto police who raided the Church’s Sunday service. Also pray for God to strengthen and encourage two journalists jailed in Azerbaijan for comparing Christian and Islamic values in a newspaper article. Thank Him for their integrity and courage, despite facing such a penalty. Ask that their prison sentence be overturned and that freedom of religious expression be allowed in the press.

Altai Region

I recently received the following letter from a pastor in the Altai Region of Russia. This is an area that is very spiritually dark and oppressed. They need us to stand with them in prayer!

“We ask you to support us in prayer. We are facing pressure here in Altai. Recently two girls aged 8 & 9 were raped. The town was full of fear. We understand that demon power is behind this. We prayed and it seems they have found the offenders. We also are facing pressure from the media. The reason is that a group of interns from Moscow came to do outreach here. Fortune tellers began to put pressure on Islamic, Shamanistic and Orthodox authorities to cause the government to bring pressure against the Protestant Church. They started fighting against us and putting all kinds of “dirt” in the media against the church. All Institutes were given an order not to collaborate with churches. There is propaganda everywhere in schools, village meetings, etc against the church. One church was kicked out from a rental building by the government. Another church which had about 100 members, many of them students, now only has 2 families left.

Please pray for:

6. God’s protection over believers and ministers

7. Wisdom for churches and boldness to stand against this pressure

8. Unity between churches and believers. (This is improving!)

9. Good relationship between the church and the government

10. Revival in the Altai region

Thank you for your prayer and support.

A pastor in Altai”

Turkey

Please continue to pray for the country of Turkey at this strategic time. Pray for God’s will in the upcoming elections July 22nd. Pray for freedom of religion to remain and for the hidden agenda of the Islamic Party not to be realized. Also pray that the EU membership application will drive further improvements in human rights, benefiting all minorities, including the Christians. Pray for the church to stand strong as it bears the loss of three Christian martyrs in April. Pray that it will become easier for churches to obtain official registration and that violence against Christians and church property would cease. Praise God for open doors and the Gospel advancing in the Izmir area. Pray that there would be breakthrough in other areas of Turkey as well.

Standing together in prayer,

CAPN Coordinator
